Tattoo your dog’s
brain with basic obedience commands
Correcting this behavior in a positive manner (as oppose to
yelling at your dog) requires the use of basic obedience
commands such as down or sit command.
Teach your dog to heed these commands and ask your
guest/visitor not to greet your dog with joy when being jumped
on. See, from my observation, most visitors would shower
praises whenever a puppy jumps to greet them.
They too regard this as a cute behavior and naturally, this
would only serve to further encourage the behavior.
Therefore, you should instruct your guest not to provide
positive attention when the puppy or dog jumps on them.
And once your dog has fully learned the appropriate
obedience commands and as soon as you see him performing this
behavior, immediately tell him to “sit” or “stay down”.
Also for best result, instruct your guest to issue these
commands when your dog jumps on him or her. This helps to get
your dog to fully grasp on the fact that this habit is
inappropriate and discouraged by people around him.
Practice how to stop a dog
from jumping up on people by conducting the following
steps.
- Make sure your dog is already capable of understanding
the basic sit, stay and down commands. Now get your dog to
stand by the door.
- Next, ask a friend to enter the house and get close to
your dog.
- If your dog doesn’t jump, praise and say good boy/girl
and tell your friend to present a treat to the
dog.
- If your dog jumps, immediately tell him to “sit” in a
firm tone of voice and be sure to tell your friend to back
away from your dog. No treats and repeat step 1 -
3 once more.
- Remember to give praise and reward if the dog sits when
your friend comes to him. Your goal here is to teach your
dog that he’ll be showered with praise and given a reward
if he doesn’t jump on people.
Do a the above steps a few times per week and you’ll
notice a positive difference as your dog finally gets the idea
that jumping on people is a discouraged habit.
You can also use a clicker to conduct this practice. The
methods described in this clicker
training course requires no treat initially, thus you
effectively teach your dog not perform this behavior without
having to give reward or in other words, bribe.
Massive Action,
Massive Consistency!
No matter which methods you opt to do, always remember to
remain consistent when training your dog. Don’t do it like
twice this week, and then zero training the next week.
Stick to a schedule and remember to make each training
session short and to the point so that you and your dog won’t
get too tired in the long run. I feel that short,
straightforward training session is easier to handle and you’re
less likely deviate form your original schedule.
Recommended course for turning your
stubborn, jumping addict doggy into an obedient and
highly trainable pet
