If boredom is the cause, then the best remedy is to spend more time with your dog. Take him out for walks and stimulate his mind by asking him to do something useful for you.

Yes, make your dog feel useful by training him to retrieve or get your mail from the mailbox. You can learn the exact methods on how to the aforementioned tasks this here.

Also get him to perform basic and advanced obedience commands and appropriately reward him with treats. These activities will help immensely in preventing your dog from barking excessively.

Although barking is a natural behavior, you still want to keep it under control of course. Barking at people for no reason and at all times is obviously unnatural, and not to mention annoying.

If you find your dog barking at people, please do not respond by shouting at your dog. Yelling would only exacerbate the problem.

Why?

Because your dog may think that you’re barking along with him!

And no comforting either. When excessive barking occurs, people tend to comfort their dogs instinctively. I used to do that too. Whenever my Brylow shifts to barking mode, I’d go “oh shhh, it’s Ok, it’s Ok, Brylow, relax champ…

Bad mistake!

After reading a few dog training courses, I realized that this is a BIG No-No. You shouldn’t comfort your dog as this may give him the idea that barking will earn him some extra attention points.

Train your dog to follow appropriate commands like barking interruption using clicker, speak and quiet. Practice these commands with your dog daily and remember to keep each training session short so that your dog doesn’t get too overwhelmed. Before long, you’ll have complete control over his barking problem.

As for poor socialization, what you can do is bring people over to your place and allow the dog to get a feel of being handled by a human other than you.

I say “a human” because you need train your dog to get accustomed to human contact in a very gradual manner. Start by bringing just one person over to your house.

Take it slow. Ask that person to feed treats and play nicely with your dog. Later on, try asking a few friends over and get them to play and feed the dog.

Also remember to take your dog for walks regularly to allow him to familiarize himself with many different people and dogs. Don’t be like my friend Andy who kept his dog in the house for months!
